Every child deserves a promise neighborhood which is why West Side Promise Neighborhood (WSPN) has brought together 16 organizations across all sectors such as WEDI, City of Buffalo, WNY United, and Citizens Bank to facilitate conversations on strengthening opportunities for underserved children and families. The mission of the Anne Frank Project (AFP) is to use storytelling as a vehicle for community building, conflict resolution, and identity exploration. AFP has provided 50 visits to local schools and organizations annually and implemented six National Social Justice Festivals with over 18,000 attendees last year alone. Learn more about AFP.
Buffalo State is committed to help develop civically-engaged students. 1,260 students were registered during voter registration drives in 2019 alone. The CCE hosted a “Voting 101: Why and How” virtual webinar in partnership with Student Leadership and Engagement. Sixteen faculty/staff members were trained to help register students to vote. In partnership with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, Buffalo State became a location where students and community members could complete and file their taxes for free, using a supported online software and with support from a small team of volunteers. In its pilot year (2019) 100 individuals attended over three sessions. This is now an annual initiative – sign up for free tax help here
The census impacts our region’s political and economic resources. A mobile “Census Help Desk” was deployed to multiple areas of the college campus and the community to educate individuals and provide technical support for the completion of the 2020 Census survey through their new online form. 1,246 members of the campus + Buffalo community had been reached through in-person efforts and another 26,000 though social media.
Banking with Credit Unions and CDFIs instead of large corporate banks is not only better for your own wallet but helps keep high impact dollars in our communities.
