The Civic and Community Engagement Office is looking for faculty and staff members to serve in an essential role as a Trip Advisor for the Alternative Break program. Regardless of which trip you help facilitate, what spans across all of our Alternative Break trips is our mission – as a program we aim to provide hands-on learning opportunities based in service partnerships with community organizations; engage students in critical reflection and discussion about social justice issues; and build community. The faculty/staff Trip Advisor role is to support and enhance the student experience by collaborating with student site leaders during the trip experience. The Trip Advisor is NOT expected to plan or organize the logistics—the student site leaders take care of the coordination—however, the Trip Advisor is positioned to assist the student site leaders carry out logistics of the experience and solve problems or emergencies.
Over the last eight years, our program has grown exponentially as a result of student demand and leadership. Now we are looking to the campus leaders for supporting our program through service as Trip Advisors during the Alternative Break trip experience.

The Trip Advisor's responsibilities are primarily during the trip experience, but minimal before and after commitments are also necessary.
Attend at least two pre-trip orientation meetings to get acquainted with your group and gain experience with your service trip.
Fully engage in the Alternative Break trip, including service, reflection, travel, and group activities.
Transport students to and from their trip location and service sites (if applicable).
Support student site leaders in their leadership.
Manage finances and purchases during trip.
Enforce university and program policies and procedures as necessary, including code of conduct and alcohol- and drug-free policy.
Serve as a resource should students have questions or concerns, should student site leaders encounter unexpected problems, or in case of an emergency during their trip.
Serve as a role model for students by ensuring the group is inclusive and respectful and by upholding all university and program policies and procedures.
Communicate with Civic and Community Engagement Office staff throughout the service trip, particularly in the case of incident/policy violation and/or emergencies.
Secure release from immediate supervisor.
Meet with Civic and Community Engagement Office staff after the trip experience to debrief.
Strong group facilitation skills and experience;
Commitment to social justice and community service;
Willingness to support student leadership;
Willingness to lead by example;
Knowledge of trip/issue focus preferred, but not essential.
All expenses are covered by the Civic and Community Engagement Office.
Record this as a campus service experience on your annual report.
Engage with high-caliber students outside of the classroom.
Serve in a mentoring role for student site leaders and participants.
Play a role in Buffalo State’s community partnerships.
