BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: As the only urban public university in the SUNY system, SUNY Buffalo State is dedicated to supporting the intellectual growth of its students through campus and community collaborations. The Buffalo State Civic and Community Engagement Office (CCE) and Community Academic Center (CAC) are at the forefront of the campus’ collaboration with community partners. The CCE mission is to inspire lives of active citizenship and social responsibility in a diverse and complex society and to connect students, faculty, staff, and community partners through reciprocal curricular and co-curricular community-engaged learning to address identified community needs. The CAC's mission is to coordinate and anchor educational support programming for local youth, adults, and families. All CAC programs are open to community members and supported by Buffalo State community-based learners.
The VISTA member will support the college’s deep civic and community engagement work, impacting low-income and diverse community members through educational programming efforts, engaging students in community-based learning, and building capacity for community engagement. The VISTA member will focus on three primary objectives: 1) provide support for CAC educational programs including Buffalo Beginnings for Newcomer Refugee Children and Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) and Citizenship Classes; 2) collaborate with community organizations to deepen partnerships and engage first-year students in educational and other services; and 3) support capacity building of educational programming and first-year community engagement activities.
Outreach and collaborate with student organizations, clubs, fraternities and sororities, their staff advisors and overseeing offices to understand existing community engagement efforts and expand opportunities
Identify and connect students to volunteer and service-learning opportunities that meet identified community needs.
Support first-year service-learning and co-curricular service initiatives in partnership with community organizations
Collaborate to expand community engagement website presence, social media, and other communication tools to campus and community constituents.
Assist with civic and community engagement event planning, e.g., Bengals Dare to Care, Celebration of Service, Alternative Break
Coordinate and supervise Buffalo State community-based learners in educational programing and other services at the Community Academic Center
Outreach and collaborate with community organizations
Contribute to ongoing reports, tracking, and assessments
Create training materials and implement orientations for volunteers and service-learning students
Assist staff in other aspects of the program, as needed.
Flexible hours, with possible weekend and evening commitments.
